Quote :
RYAN GIGGS is considering ending his career in American Major League Soccer with David Beckham.

The Manchester United legend is likely to retire from Premier League football at the end of next season.

But Giggs, 36, said: "Becks is probably the biggest footballer worldwide and he's still playing for England's national team so it's hard not to respect the quality of MLS."

Giggs is Old Trafford's most-decorated player ever and could be tempted by a swansong in the US with his wife and two kids.

He added: "Being in America you have a great lifestyle - good for raising a family - and the play is getting better.

"I still have a year left with Manchester United. After that maybe I'll be too old."

United are in Chicago at the moment at the start of a pre-season tour of Canada and the States, which will include a game against the MLS All-Stars.

Giggs continues to impress for United and his desire remains strong now the end of his top-flight career approaches.

He said: "The older you get the more you appreciate what you've got.

"With each season I've come to appreciate it more. And I think it shows in the way you play - you play knowing you may be done soon."

From the Sun.

It's mostly bollocks. He is just saying it for PR purposes. He has to retire with United sad

The original non-fabricated article

Quote :
Six years later, Ryan Giggs and Manchester United return to USA
By Mike Foss, USA TODAY
Ryan Giggs begins his third decade at Manchester United against defending English Premier League champion Chelsea on Aug. 8. Until then, Giggs and the Red Devils are preparing in the United States against Major League Soccer's best.

"We want to get our fitness and start out without any injuries," Giggs said. "It's a good opportunity to get our rhythm against good competition."

United will play four exhibitions during its North American tour, beginning with Scotland's Celtic F.C. in Toronto on Friday night. The team will also play the Philadelphia Union (July 21) and the Kansas City Wizards (July 25) before completing its tour in Houston at the MLS All-Star Game on July 28.

Other United players confirmed for the tour include Nani, Paul Scholes, Darren Fletcher and Edwin Van der Sar.

It's been six years since United has played in the U.S., and Giggs thinks the American soccer landscape is rapidly changing.

"MLS has grown and the success of the USA in the World Cup can only have helped football," he said last week in a telephone interview. "American fans are great and we're happy to be coming back."

Another boost to MLS' profile has been the signing of Giggs' former teammate at Manchester United, David Beckham to the L.A. Galaxy.

"Becks is probably the biggest footballer worldwide," Giggs said. "And he's still playing for England's national team so it's hard not to respect the quality of MLS."

Giggs, 36, has been central to United's success over the past two decades. The 1999-00 season was perhaps Giggs' finest. His wonder-goal in the FA Cup semifinal set United up for title wins in the FA Cup, the English Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. It was the first time a club won league, country and European titles in the same year.

"The older you get the more you appreciate what you've got," Giggs said. "With each season I've come to appreciate it more, I've enjoyed it more and I think it shows in the way you play. You play knowing you may be done soon."

Giggs has one year left in his contract with United. Some international players have decided to play out their golden professional years in MLS, such as Beckham and possibly French dynamo Thierry Henry following his departure from F.C. Barcelona. Could Giggs join that list?

"Being in America you have a great lifestyle — good for raising a family," said Giggs, who has two children — Liberty and Zach — with wife Stacey. "The play is getting better. I still have a year left with Manchester United. After that maybe, maybe I'll be too old."

It's hard for a soccer fan not to get weak at the knees thinking about the United man in MLS colors. For now, Americans can enjoy Giggs and the rest of United facing off against the best of MLS in July.
