| - Quote :
- Manchester United are set to splash £15m on Bolton’s highly-rated defender Gary Cahill.
Sir Alex Ferguson is becoming increasingly worried over his first choice defensive partnership of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.
Ferdinand, who played only 19 times last season for United because of leg and back problems, also missed the World Cup because of a knee ligament injury suffered in the first training session in South Africa.
And there are fears the England captain might not be ready for a comeback until late September.
Meanwhile Vidic, who formed Europe’s best defensive partnership with Ferdinand in 2007 and 2008, has yet to settle a new Old Trafford deal amid speculation that he could leave United.
Real Madrid have constantly been tracking the Serb and he’s been touted as one of Jose Mourinho’s targets for the Bernabeu to strengthen the Galacticos at the back.
United have Jonny Evans and newcomer Chris Smalling as back up but Cahill, 24, has now emerged as a front runner to add to Fergie’s defensive stock.
Cahill is already tipped as a beneficiary from England’s World Cup debacle with John Terry, Ledley King, Jamie Carragher and Matthew Upson all failing to impress. Cahill was in one Fabio Capello squad last summer against Kazakhstan but has yet to win a full cap.
The Sheffield-born, former Aston Villa defender has previously been linked with Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs.
It is likely Cahill will feature when the Italian names his squad for next month’s friendly against Hungary and the European Championship qualifier with Bulgaria in September.
Wanderers chief Owen Coyle certainly believes Cahill is good enough, saying: “He is the best centre-half in England. He is the complete package. I recommended him to be part of the World Cup squad.
“The disappointment for me was that he wasn’t in the initial 30-man squad. If he had been, they would have seen him and I know he would have been selected.”
Cahill admitted: “Being realistic, if a big team wanted me to come and play for them, then you have got to look at it. It may be a right decision for both sides.
“I’m not saying for one minute I want to leave Bolton. I have loved my time here and the club has done brilliantly for me.” M.E.NAt 15m it's a bit high considering that we've already signed Smalling for around 10m. Plus we have pretty good cover in the center even with Rio's back problems. But if we're about to sell Vidic, then I'll happily have him as he's a pretty good defender and at 24 years of age, can give us plenty years of good service. |

| 15 m is too high. Anything above 12m would be a steal I think. 8-10 m would be an appropriate amount. havent seen him play much so wont judge him. and is he related to tim cahill? |

and is he related to tim cahill? A steals means an awesome deal for the buying team. He isn't related to Tim Cahill. He's english and tim is an Aussie. |

and is he related to tim cahill? Tim is Australian, Gary is English. So not quite, I think, unless of course they both had the same Great^200 times grandfather. And steal? It would be overpriced Anything below 7M will be a steal And, IF Vidic leaves, *touchwood*, we WOULD need some cover in the back. But in that case, other players linked with a move to OT can be looked at as well, the likes of Kjaer (who likes set to move to Wolfsburg according to latest reports), and David Luiz of Benfica, Jagielka also I read somewhere (touted for a move to OT), Rolando and Bruno Alves both were also linked. (Pique too ) I agree that Gary Cahill at 24 is up there among the best realistically possible targets. |

If Vidic stays we already have very good back up. Evans and Smalling. We can play O'shea/Brown at CB as we're covered in the fullbacks area with the Da Silvas, Evra and Nevilly. Worst case scenario - we can play De Laet all across the defence. I bet Evans will cement himself alongside Vidic this year. - Navpreet wrote:

I agree that Gary Cahill at 24 is up there among the best realistically possible targets. You don't get anything for 7m these days. Looking back I think 15m might be an appropriate price considering he'd love to play for us unlike some Latin players who would fuck off as soon as an offer comes in and he'd give us 6 years or so of quality service. Plus he won't demand THAT high wages. Jagielka is also a decent defender but he has had problems with injuries of late I think and he's close to 28 I think so I'd rather have Cahill. And please no to Bruno Alves! That's the guy that made that horrendous error which led to Rooney scoring the first goal in 2-2 draw at OT over Porto |

EVEN then, I believe we are covered in defence IF Vidic stays. Otherwise, yes - There will be a need for a backup. Another thing, SAF can ask Evans into the first team in place of Vidic (if he leaves), and if Rio's injury concerns continue, then another quality CB would be needed. Smalling will take some time to become class. |

Smalling will take some time to become class. Yeah, it all depends on Vidic. If he stays, we don't need a CB. It's a must we get some quality in if he leaves. I think we'll loan out Mame. There are plenty of strikers at the moment and Macheda and Welbeck are excused from the 25 man squad being under 21. So we'll have Hernandez, Rooney, Owen and Berba which is more than enough with Kiko and Welbeck for Carling Cup and stuff. So Diouf would be a bit useless for a season or so. |
