Sir Alex Ferguson has dismissed fears of a World Cup hangover for Wayne Rooney, insisting that the England striker will be back as good as ever for Manchester United next season.

United manager Ferguson also rebutted suggestions that Rooney was not mentally or physically prepared for South Africa.

But Ferguson must start the campaign without centre-back Rio Ferdinand, who will be out for four months after surgery on the knee-ligment injury he suffered in the World Cup build-up.

The big question for Ferguson, however, concerns Rooney after his dismal World Cup, but the United boss said: 'There's nothing wrong with the lad or his fitness. He's relaxing on holiday in Barbados and I expect him to come back refreshed for the new season.'

Rooney failed to reproduce his free-scoring United form in South Africa, suffering under the weight of expectation and the general malaise which appeared to grip the England team.

One suggestion, denied by Ferguson, was that he had not fully recovered from the ankle injury he suffered near the end of last season.

The striker also apologised to the fans he had lambasted for booing after the goalless draw with Algeria.

Rooney, along with other United players involved in the World Cup, will miss the pre-season tour of the United States and Canada, which starts in eight days' time.

However, Ferguson confirmed that new signing Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez will link up with the team in time to face former club Chivas de Guadalajara on the Mexican leg of their tour, an arrangement that was part of the 22-year-old striker's £10million move.

He scored two World Cup goals for Mexico and Ferguson said: 'He looks an exciting prospect. He has pace and a good scoring record. I'm looking forward to seeing him in a United shirt."

Hernandez and former Fulham defender Chris Smalling look like being the only new United faces next season.

Ferguson added: 'We've looked at a few options. We did consider David Villa but he was always going to Barcelona. I just don't believe there is value out there at the moment. I'm very happy with the strength of our squad as it is.'
