Fergie calms Berba fears
United striker will not need knee op
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson insists Dimitar Berbatov will not require an operation on a niggling knee injury.
The Bulgarian has been struggling with the problem for some time, with the Red Devils forced to pick and choose when to throw him into action.
However, he has been getting stronger and stronger as the season has progressed and came through 90 minutes against Hull City on Sunday unscathed.
Ferguson believes Berbatov will prove to be an important attacking weapon for United during the remainder of the 2009/10 campaign, alongside Wayne Rooney, and is delighted to learn that the 28-year-old will not be forced to go under the knife.
"Dimitar has had a bit of a knee niggle but it is a lot better now," said the Red Devils chief.
"We have been treating him quite carefully because we know that we need him in the important second part of the season.
"He came through a full game against Hull and felt fine. He doesn't need an operation and hopefully that is it gone now."
Danger
Berbatov will be hoping to feature against Wigan on Wednesday as United look to close the five-point gap which separates them from table-topping Chelsea.
While both sides have been far from their all-conquering best of late, Ferguson believes the Premier League title race will become a straight tussle between the Red Devils and the Blues.
"At the start of the season I saw Chelsea as our biggest danger and I have not changed my mind," said Ferguson.
"Nobody has had a consistent run really and although it is not looking like it at the moment, history tells you that two teams break away at the end.
"Chelsea are the big danger because they too have great experience."
