| Manchester United will go west to prepare for the 2010/11 season, with new matches announced today for Toronto, Philadelphia, Kansas City and Houston.
The squad, headed by Ryan Giggs and including stars such as Paul Scholes, Edwin van der Sar, Darren Fletcher, Antonio Valencia, John O’Shea, Michael Owen and Dimitar Berbatov, will be bolstered by a number of the promising young players, such as Federico Macheda and the da Silva twins.
First stop is a training camp in Chicago, home of new shirt sponsors Aon. This will be followed by a visit to the Rogers Center in Toronto for a match against Celtic on 16 July, then a return to the Lincoln Financial Field, where United played in 2003 and 2004, against Philadelphia Union on 21 July. Four days later, the Kansas City Wizards provide the opposition at the Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City. The US matches are completed in Houston on 28 July with a game against the MLS All-Stars in the Reliant Stadium.
Two days later, as already announced, the squad will play the Club’s first ever match in Mexico to open Chivas’ new 45,000 seat stadium in Guadalajara.
Sir Alex Ferguson said: “It’s great to be going back to North America. I enjoyed the last two tours there in 2003 and 2004 immensely. The quality of the facilities is outstanding and there is a real enthusiasm in the crowds. It’s especially pleasing to be going in a World Cup year, when the interest in football will be at its height.” |

| United relish States return Preparation for a rigorous 2010/11 campaign will be the main aim of United's summer trip to the US and Canada, according to David Gill.
Speaking at the official launch of Tour 2010 in New York, the Reds' chief executive said pre-season excursions serve several important purposes for the club - with football objectives being at the top of the agenda.
"Pre-season tours allow us to bring the team to fans that would otherwise not be able to see them play live other than on the television," said Gill.
"Tours also give us the opportunity to visit our increasingly global family of commercial partners in local markets that are key to their relationship with the club. This year we'll meet our key partners Nike and our new shirt sponsor, Aon, on home soil.
"And they allow us to engage people in the cities in which we play, through the Manchester United Foundation which does great work in uniting communities and helping young people to fulfil their potential.
"But above all, pre-season tours help prepare the team for the rigours of sixty-plus games in a season, involving the Premier League, hopefully the latter stages of the UEFA Champions League and, we hope, long runs in the domestic cup competitions.
"We know the stadiums and the training facilities in America are excellent. It's one reason why we're returning to Philadelphia, the main training venue for our 2003 and 2004 visits. |

| [Continued] "We’re delighted to be coming back to America. It’s a place the players always enjoy coming to. We will bring a very strong first-team squad, including Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Edwin van der Sar, Darren Fletcher, John O’Shea and hopefully Michael Owen, as well as some of our exciting young players such as the da Silva twins, Federico Macheda and Danny Welbeck. "We’re looking forward to the welcome and the courtesy that are always extended in this part of the world. And we’re hoping to give our 9million fans in North America some top football to enjoy." United's first stop on Tour 2010 is a training camp in Chicago, home of Aon. This will be followed by a visit to the Rogers Center in Toronto for a match against Celtic on 16 July, then a return to the Lincoln Financial Field, where United played in 2003 and 2004, against Philadelphia Union on 21 July. | Neville forced to sit out tour Veteran defender sustains calf injury
Gary Neville will miss Manchester United's pre-season tour of America after sustaining a small tear in his calf muscle.
The veteran defender was set to play a part in United's preparations for the new season next month, but will now remain at the club's Carrington training ground base instead of flying out to Chicago on Monday.
The 35-year-old's knock is thought to only be a minor setback and he will be rested to prepare for the start of the Premier League in August.
It will come as a blow to the player after recovering from a series of injuries to finish strongly at Old Trafford after being offered a one-year extension to his deal as his career winds down.
Neville joins England captain Rio Ferdinand on the treatment table, who was unable to play any part in his country's World Cup campaign after injuring his knee in their first training session before the tournament.
United will face Celtic in their opening game of their tour in Toronto next Friday, with several first-team players, including new signings Chris Smalling and Javier Hernandez, joining the party. |

| Dimitar Berbatov shines in Manchester United's stroll past Celtic Manchester United 3-1 Celtic Dimitar Berbatov, centre, is congratulated by Gabriel Obertan and Ryan Giggs after putting Manchester United ahead against Celtic. Photograph: Mark Blinch/ReutersThere was a new haircut, a new tattoo and maybe, just maybe, a new beginning for Dimitar Berbatov at Manchester United tonight as the Bulgarian inspired Sir Alex Ferguson's team to victory over Celtic in Toronto. The £30.75m signing has a long way to go to find redemption at Old Trafford but one impressive finish and two immaculate assists provided a timely reminder of his genuine, if often infuriating, talent. The available 'names' in United's travelling party - Berbatov, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs in ascending order of adulation from the Toronto crowd - all started an initially pedestrian pre-season friendly brightened by the occasional touch of class from the Bulgarian plus several Hollywood passes from Scholes. Chris Smalling's first appearance for United since his £12m transfer from Fulham in January, alongside Jonny Evans in a defence including the Brazilian twins Rafael and Fabio da Silva, gave their back four an average age of 20.5. It was to Neil Lennon's obvious irritation on the touchline that Celtic tested that inexperience only once before the interval, Charlie Mulgrew striking the outside of the post following an adventurous run down the left. United hardly fared much better in terms of their penetration but the awareness of Berbatov, combined with the energy of the Brazilian full-backs and Gabriel Obertan, carved by far the better chances. The Bulgarian produced the first of this season's strops when he was ignored by Obertan as the French winger raced clear on goal thanks to a measured pass from Rafael. With Berbatov unmarked in front of an open goal, Obertan opted to shoot and dragged his effort horribly wide of Celtic's goalkeeper Lukasz Zaluska. He was immediately informed of his error by the United striker. Rather than brood, however, Berbatov released his frustrations in a vibrant, dominant spell. First he unleashed a powerful drive inches wide then, from Mame Biram Diouf's cross from the left, controlled an awkward bounce superbly before sweeping a left-footed shot beyond Zaluska. The introduction of Georgios Samaras for Celtic in the second half, a Manchester City flop with an obvious point to prove, and the departure of Scholes and Giggs for United initially tilted the balance towards Lennon's side. Samaras thought he had equalised when he headed James Forrest's free-kick past Edwin Van der Sar only to receive an offside flag and a punch to the head from the United keeper for his troubles instead. On the hour, however, the Greece international, who was nicknamed 'Tragedy' at City, brought Celtic deservedly level from the penalty spot after Smalling had been easily beaten by Joe Ledley and pulled the former Cardiff City midfielder to the floor. United responded positively, and with 12 minutes remaining Berbatov found space on the right and crossed low for the substitute Danny Welbeck to bundle the ball home from close range. The Bulgarian then produced a delightful one-two with Tom Cleverley whose low shot from 25-yards took a wicked deflection to leave Zaluska stranded in the Celtic goal. Guardian |
