8 dead, 33 injured in bomb blast in Pune

At least eight people were killed and 33 injured in a suspected bomb blast in a popular bakery in Koregaon Park which also houses a Jewish prayer house and the Osho Ashram here this evening. The blast took place at the German Bakery, an old business establishment, at around 1830 hours.

The injured have been rushed to Ruby Hall, Jahangir and Budhrani hospitals in the city.

"There was a bomb blast. There have been eight deaths and 33 people were injured", said Pune Joint Commissioner of Police Rajendra Sonwane.

"It is a suspected bomb blast. So far, it is not confirmed. We are verifying this", he said adding "we have not arrived at any conclusion at this stage but prima facie it appears that it is a bomb blast".

Most probably, it's a terror attack. A CBI forensic team being sent to Pune, says Union Home Secretary G K Pillai. A team of National Investigative Agency (NIA) officials is also being sent to Pune, says Pillai.

Pune ATS hs deployed sniifer dogs at the site of the blast. According to eyewitnesses, an udentified bag was seen near German bakery.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan said it was yet to be established as to what was the cause of the blast. He said he had talked to the Police Commissioner who told him that unless they examined the evidence on the scene of the blast they cannot come to any conclusion.

'Not alright to say entire Pune targeted,' says Sharad Pawar

Mumbai: It is not alright to conclude after this evening's blast in Pune that entire Pune city was targeted, Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar has said.

"It is not alright to arrive at a conclusion that the entire Pune city has been targeted," Pawar said. The place where the blast took place is an isolated area, he added.

"I have spoken to home minister R R Patil, district guardian minister Ajit Pawar and district collector," Pawar said.

On the issue of American terror suspect David Headley's visits to the Osho Ashram located near the German Bakery in Koregaon Park which witnessed the bomb blast, Pawar said "I have no information as yet to reach this conclusion."

Expressing confidence that people of Pune will face the incident with a brave face, Pawar said "when I was chief minister, Mumbai saw 11 simultaneous blasts but everything returned to normal soon."

There is no need for Pune residents to panic, Pawar said.

Pune blast: 5 to 7 kg of IED was used in German Bakery blast

Pune: The explosion, which left about 8 persons, including three foreign nationals and 33 injured here this evening at the German Bakery, was a bomb blast in which Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was used.

At least five to seven kilogram of IED was used in the bomb blast, which occured outside the German Bakery here, NDTV reported Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) sources as saying.

Initial reports suggested Indian Mujahideen is being suspected to be behind the blast, the report added.

At least eight persons, including three foreign nationals, have died and 40 injured, including a Sudan national, in the bakery blast which has occurred here at about 7.30 p.m. in Koregaon Park here.

NDTV report stated home ministry sources saying that it looks like a bomb blast and it doesn’t look like any normal blast. The blast occurred when an unidentified bag was being opened by someone, the report added.

Meanwhile, another unclaimed bag has been found at the place of incident. The blast occurred at the German Bakery, Koregaon Park. It is located near Osho Ashram, which is visited by a lot of foreign nationals.

Germany Bakery is a popular venue here and is visited by a lot of foreign nationals. The injured, meanwhile, have been rushed to the nearby Sassoon Hospital. The number of the injured is expected to rise.
